Summary: James knows that Remus and Sirius like each other and he can’t stand it anymore.
“I think James is wonderful on a broom.” Remus turned his head slightly to grin at James, his hair smacking him in the face as he did so. Still grinning, he used his palm to hold back his fringe as he watched for James’ response. The harsh wind made his eyes water, and James stood as a messy puddle, dripping down Remus’ vision.
Sirius scoffed loudly. “Prongs is just good at flying because of those skinny stick legs of his. I could do better, I could.”
Swinging around, James punched Sirius in the chest. “Fuck off! I’d like to see you try to catch a snitch in this soddin’ wind.” He flipped Sirius a two finger salute, but the action was buggered when a gush of wind made James stagger back in threat of losing his balance.
“Please, Wormtail here could out fly you any day.” Remus looked at Peter and found that his face had turned a bright red from James’ words.
“D-don’t believe them, Padfoot,” Peter said, laughing with harsh anxiety. “You know I’m shite on a broom.”
Sirius looked at Remus, his lidded eyes cast downward, almost as if he were looking at the ground. “Does it matter to you how someone rides?” His voice was soft, but powerful and it made a shiver run through Remus.
Shaking his head, Remus tried to catch his breath before he responded. What the fuck was wrong with him? “No, I don’t think so.”
“But you aren’t sure?” Sirius lifted his head slightly and caught his full bottom lip between his teeth.
“Fuck’s sake, stop that!” James punched Sirius in the shoulder and heaved a sigh in exasperation. His eyes darted to Remus, and it seemed James wanted something nonverbal to pass between them, but Remus couldn’t understand.
Remus shrugged and glanced down at his feet, clutching at the back of his neck. He felt his cheeks grow warm and his stomach clench with teetering anger. What was James trying to say to him? His stomach tightened more, and he decided that he didn’t want to know.
“You fucking bastard!” Sirius exclaimed, his face reddening. “I’m not doing anything!” He took a step forward and lifted his fist in the air.
James laughed and pulled his wand from his pocket. “Fuck your fist, you know I’ll murderer you with hexes.”
“What is going on?” Peter asked, his voice unsure.
“Yeah, I’d like to know as well.” Remus stepped forward to look at Sirius more closely. The sun was setting and the harsh rays blinded him for a moment before he cupped his hand over his eyes.
Sirius’ face was rapidly turning purple, and he looked at James almost pleadingly. “Nothing the fuck is wrong, okay?” he said with clenched teeth.
James rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “If you say so, you fucking coward!”
“I’m not a fucking coward and you are a shite for acting this way! I knew if I told you that you be like this!” Sirius’ expression was stormy, his chest heaving.
Peter’s eyes were brightened with excitement. “Tell him what? What did you tell him, Padfoot?”
Sirius threw his hands up and turned his back to the group. “Fuck all of you, I swear.”
James stared at Remus and put his finger to his own lips. “Hey, Moony,” he said casually, his voice a bit too high, “I have to tell you something. It concerns Pad –”
Yelping, Sirius lunged forward and smacked his hand over James’ mouth. “Shuddup, you cunt! I don’t want you to tell them!”
“Tell us what?” Peter asked, his voice curious – almost pleading. “Tell us what? Come on! You have to tell us!”
It felt as if an iron hand was squeezing the air from Remus’ throat, his heart pounding quickly within his chest. His vision blur for a moment, because – oh god – he just knew this was about him. Whatever it was, he hoped it had nothing to do with the way Sirius made him feel.
“All right, all right,” James said, pushing Sirius away. “I won’t tell them if you show me that you can fly better than Wormtail.”
Visible relief washed over Sirius. “Deal.” He smiled cheekily and winked at Remus. “Give me that,” he said, yanking the broom from James’ hand.
James stepped closer to Remus, nodding as he waved Sirius off. “I fucking doubt you can do it, Padfoot. You ride like a damn pansy, and we all know Wormtail here has a great dive.”
“Whatever,” Sirius said, kicking off from the ground. “Watch this!” His voice echoed through the air as he rose higher.
When Sirius began his predictable spin and dive, James pulled at Remus’ sleeve and whispered harshly, “Padfoot likes you, okay? A lot. And I know you like him as well – don’t you fucking dare try to deny it.” He glared as Remus opened his mouth to protest. “I’m sick of watching you flirt with each other without doing anything about it. When Sirius gets off that broom, you better go over there and tell him you like him, or I’m doing it for you.”
Ice surged through Remus’ veins. He – he couldn’t possibly do that. Not in a million years. After a long moment, Remus responded, “But – how – why – I can’t –”
“You bloody well can! Or I’m doing it for you.” James stared steadily into his eyes.
“Hey, um – really?” Peter asked, looking over as Sirius began to yell something. “That’s just – weird, you two liking each other.”
“It’s not weird!” James snapped. “It’s perfectly all right and it’s the truth.” He turned his attention back to Remus. “Don’t you fucking flake on me. I’ll keep my word, I will.”
Trembling, Remus doubted he could even walk the few steps to where Sirius had landed. Oh, god – this was the end of him; he just knew it. Sirius was going to laugh in his face and call him a fucking ponce, and that’s it. Remus would forever be known as a ponce to Sirius.
“Do it, or I will,” James repeated, pointing his finger at Remus.
Remus couldn’t believe he was in the situation. How did the day suddenly turn so horrific? Gulping, he inched forward slowly until Sirius had met him halfway. Sirius held the broom in his hand and beamed at Remus. “I told you, didn’t I?”
Nodding, Remus was afraid to open his mouth in fear of vomiting. He placed a shaking hand on Sirius’ chest, and felt his friend freeze under the touch. Sirius’ eyes widened and blood rushed to his face.
“Moony?” Sirius asked, his voice trembling.
He felt Sirius’ entire body quiver under his hand. Closing his eyes, he said softly, “James wanted me to tell you that I like you.”
After a long pause, Remus cracked his eyes open and found Sirius gaping at him, his eyes glittering. Sirius gulped and asked, “Really? James just didn’t tell you to say that?”
Remus was shocked. “Why?” he asked, his voice and the hope within growing stronger. “Would it matter if it were the truth?”
Sirius shrugged. “Yeah, I guess it would.”
Empowered, Remus said, “Then it’s the truth. Honest.”
“Shuddup, it’s not gross!” James yelled, but his voice was drowned out by Sirius slowly bringing his hand up to caress Remus’ cheek.
“That’s great – because – I like you – too.” He stared at Remus, his eyes shining with something close to admiration.
Remus grinned widely. “I know.”
